How we approach a gravel driveway build

Redd Excavation LLC is your expert partner in building a high-quality gravel driveway tailored to your needs. Our process is streamlined and efficient to deliver exceptional results every time.

  1. Consultation and Site Assessment: Our experienced team begins by conducting a thorough site evaluation, understanding your vision, and discussing your requirements. This starts by giving us a call at 618-417-7381. We can schedule a time to come look at your property and discuss your goals with you, and how we can best achieve them!
  2. Site Prep: We start by clearing the designated area of any obstacles or debris, utilizing heavy machinery for grubbing, clearing, and grading the surface as needed. The most overlooked portion of the site prep is drainage. The easiest way to to put a black eye on a property is building a structure, or drive without taking drainage into account. We will survey and assess the land, and what actions need to be taken to ensure that your property will drain post project. This typically involves installing culverts or French drains, and moving a bit of dirt to make the water flow the way we want it to.
  3. Base Layer Installation: Once grading is complete, we will roll out a layer of geotex fabric. This will run most of the width of your drive, and the full length. Geotextile fabric, commonly referred to as geotex fabric, serves several purposes when used on a driveway:
    • Soil Stabilization: Geotextile fabric helps to stabilize the soil beneath the driveway by preventing the mixing of different soil layers. It acts as a barrier, keeping the base layer of gravel or crushed stone separate from the underlying soil. This reduces the risk of soil erosion and settling, which can cause the driveway surface to become uneven or develop potholes over time.
    • Drainage Improvement: By allowing water to pass through while preventing soil particles from migrating upward, geotextile fabric helps to improve drainage on the driveway. This reduces the accumulation of water on the surface, minimizing the risk of water damage and prolonging the lifespan of the driveway.
    • Weed Control: Geotextile fabric can also help to suppress weed growth by blocking sunlight and preventing weed seeds from germinating in the underlying soil. This reduces the need for herbicides or frequent weed removal, resulting in a cleaner and more low-maintenance driveway surface.
  4. Gravel or Asphalt Milling Spreading: Once the fabric is rolled out, we will start trucking in (typically by a 3rd party to speed the process along and save you money), and spreading your desired gravel (CA6 Roadpack) or ground up asphalt millings if you decide to go that route. We would be happy to discuss the pros and cons of these two options when we do the site visit for your estimate.
  5. Compaction & Finishing Touches: As we move our way dumping and spreading down your driveway, we will be compacting your material as we go, insuring a good stable driveway once it’s all said and done.
